yaNY especially recommends the Celebrate Brooklyn viewing of Fritz Lang’s Metropolis, with live musical accompaniment by the Alloy Orchestra, on Thursday, August 4 at 7:00 p.m. at the Prospect Park Bandshell. The version to be shown will incorporate the 25 minutes of additional footage recently discovered in Argentina, making the restored film only four minutes shorter than the original version that premiered in 1927.

According to the DOE website, SAI is “a tuition-free, intensive, four-week arts program for New York City public school students entering grades 8-12, held at Frank Sinatra School of the Arts High School in Astoria, Queens. [It] offers a unique opportunity for students to work with Department of Education arts specialists, partnering cultural organizations, and guest artists.”

The letter praised how yaNY programming “enhanced the arts learning experience for our students immeasurably, as [it] invariably ha[s] in past years.”

Thank you, Joan and Peter! We look forward to next summer.

“I don’t expect my students to go on to be filmmakers, but I guarantee that the skills they acquire will make them work better in groups and allow them to express their thoughts and ideas. Something invaluable in any job interview or next steps in life.”

A lifelong student of cinema, with his mother passing on her passion to him the day he was born, Philip has pursued a career as a filmmaker since he was thirteen years old. His resume covers everything from music videos to documentaries and his love of cinema can be seen not only in his own work, but also in his commitment and determination to educate others about the art form he holds so dear. Constantly pushing himself to find new ways to incorporate film into practically any classroom is a challenge he has found enjoying and fulfilling. His Digital Filmmaking residencies have included everything from the study of the rise of monarchs throughout history interpreted by students through stop camera animation to the analysis of the history of French cinema followed by a project that had students creating their own short films incorporating the lessons they had learned.

Philip works at the International Arts and Business High School (IABS) as their on-site coordinator and Film Artist in Residence as well as P.S. 89 in Brooklyn and Queens High School for Teaching. This year he won Best New Teaching Artist at Young Audiences New York’s 11th Annual Partners in Excellence Awards.
